Wyke 2-3 Hepworth B

Wyke are out of the cup, after a first round defeat to Hepworth United B team.

Wyke started pretty poorly, the defence were all over the place, and it didn’t take Hepworth long to score. Tai Pedder didn’t deal with a ball over the top, and the Hepworth striker broke through and scored.

Although not defending well, Wyke were proving strong up front. Joe McLoughlin was causing all sorts of problems for them, as was Quinn Riley. Quinn had a couple of chances, but they went straight into the keepers hands.

Wyke equalised pretty quickly. A long range effort from Tai Pedder, was finished by Daniel McGregor, and Wyke were back in the game.

Dom Pickersgill was holding the centre of midfield well, and at times Wyke seemed to be holding their shape (something they haven’t been doing recently).

However it was the defence again, who gifted Hepworth another goal. Hepworth led 2-1.

Hepworth continued to attack, they were winning too much in the centre of the pitch, and Wyke were not using their wings. Hepworth scored again, this time from the penalty spot, after Joe McLoughlin handled the ball in the area. Joe Couble in goals, did brilliantly to save the penalty, but it was tapped in on the rebound. 3-1 Hepworth.

Wyke had another couple of chances, Daniel McGregor Hit the bar, and Louis muff had a good effort saved. Wyke did score just before half time; Quinn Riley tapped in his first goal of the season.

Half Time 3-2.

The second half saw no goals, and was a real battle. Wyke played much better, especially at the back. Matty Dignam came in and did well to settle the defence, after a poor defensive display in the first half. Hepworth had a couple of chances, but Joe Couble made some good saves.

Dom Pickersgill and Nathan Khan played well in the middle, however they couldn’t move the ball forwards, and the wings were not providing any chances. Joe McLoughlin was playing too much down the wing himself and should have allowed left winger Scott Morris, to do this. The attack didn’t perform particularly well, and Wyke made a few chances, but didn’t really have any clear chances.

Dave’s Comments

I thought we played better, than in previous weeks, but the opposition wasn’t as good. We are too slow on the ball and are getting caught in possession too much. We need to train also on out control, as it really showed us up today. We were a bit unlucky today, but we need to be better, especially against teams in our own division.

Man of the match: Dominic Pickersgill, Dom played well today, he led most of the attacks, and was one of the few players to drive the ball forward.

Goals: Daniel McGregor, Quinn Riley.
