After their excellent 3-0 victory last week, Wibsey looked to continue with another victory over recently promoted Marsden. Marsden had finished second in the third division, amassing a huge 116 goals in the process, although their first league game had ended in a 2-0 defeat last week at the hands of Scholes Utd.

Wibsey were without last weeks man of the match Nathan Khan who was injured, and also Mudiwa Tegama who was unavailable. However another fantastic and dominant display from the Lions gave them a fantastic 6-1 victory, putting them joint top of the league.

It took only three minutes for the Lions to take the lead. Josh Thompson made a darting run down the right wing, cut inside and shot, the keeper parried the ball, and Scott Morris was there to put in the rebound.

Wibsey looked very dominant, especially in the midfield, Callum and Damien, two excellent ball-winners, were doing an exceptional job of dispossessing the Marsden players.

Against the run of play, Marsden equalised, with 7 minutes gone, their midfielder made a great run and fired a brilliant shot from 30 yards into the roof of the net, leaving keeper Tai Pedder with no chance of saving it. The score was now 1-1.

Wibsey continued to put Marsden under immense pressure. However they were struggling to find space, although Ryan and Connor did manage to create some good attacking play, but credit to Marsden for resisting the attacks.

Wibsey came close to regaining the lead, Josh put a shot wide, as did Scott Morris, and Connor Rhodes had two chances saved easily by the keeper.

However, with 20 minutes gone, the Lions got their second goal. Once again Josh Thompson was the provider beating his man and drifting in a perfect cross, Scott Morris connected with the ball beautifully, and fired it into the roof of the net, earning his, and Wibsey's second goal of the game.

The Lions kept up the pressure, and were defending with incredible ease. Michael and Davis linked up superbly, and made it look so easy. Marsden barely got near Tai Pedder in goals. Jake and Calvin were also doing an excellent job of defending the flanks, and also they were both getting up and joining attacks by supporting the wide players.

Four minutes after their last one, Wibsey added another, Mikey Brooksbank did well to control the ball from a corner, and he carried the ball 15 yards and sprayed the ball over the top for Connor Rhodes to run onto, the keeper and defender were hot on his tail but Connor got to the ball first, his first touch rounded the keeper and he easily finished into an open net. Wibsey now had a 3-1 lead.

Just before the stroke of half-time, the Lions made the score 4-1. This time it was a goal of sheer class. Michael Brooksbank advanced from defence, raced forward with the ball, taking on two players and fired a corker into the top corner from 35 yards. An unbelievable goal, giving Mikey his first goal of the season.

Half Time- Wibsey 4-1 Marsden

Wibsey totally dominated the second half, creating chance after chance. Connor Rhodes was very unlucky not to add to his first half goal tally, and Ryan Archer came very close to scoring, but most importantly was the dominance and ball winning ability which continued throughout the game. Damien Hield and Callum Docherty didn't give the Marsden midfield a second on the ball and totally bossed the game. Ryan Archer added the touch of class infront of them, playing some brilliant linking play with Connor, Josh and Scott.

Wibsey had a fair bit of shooting practice before they found their next goal. Damien Hields, Josh and Ryan all had shots go wide, and Connor forced a very good save from the Marsden Keeper.

However after 11 minutes, it was 5-1. Damien Hields whipped in a peach of a free-kick from just beyond the halfway line, it wasn't dealt with by the Marsden defence and Josh Thompson popped up with a header past the helpless keeper. Cracking play from Damien Hields to create the goal.

Josh continued to terrorise the Marsden left back, creating plenty of chances, but Connor couldn't connect well enough in the middle, and Josh had a shot well saved.

With 6 minutes left, Wibsey put the final nail in Marsden's coffin. Once again it was a goal of pure quality from the lively centre half. Mikey Brooksbank pushed up once again, wasn't closed down and rifled off another excellent shot, once again firing it well past the goalkeeper's reach.

Marsden didn't even come close to creating an attack, massive credit to the defence, in particular Michael and Davis, but credit to Bradley and Louis who came on as subs and continued to keep it solid at the back.

Full Time- Wibsey 6-1 Marsden.

Goals

Scott Morris (3, 22), Connor Rhodes (26), Michael Brooksbank (35, 64), Josh Thompson (46)

Man of the Match

Michael Brooksbank: Mikey was superb today, not only putting in one of the strongest defensive team performances I have ever seen (with Davis Peel), but he managed to create so many attacking opportunities with such fantastic distribution, he set up one goal and scored two incredible screamers.

Manager Comments

We were brilliant again today. Totally and utterly dominated!! I've never seen such a one-sided game. Apart from their wondergoal early on, Marsden didn't even come close to scoring, and we had loads of chances. We played some brilliant football, especially in the midfield and I was pleased you took on board my half time advance. We could have had 26 goals today, It was so entertaining and pure quality. We are going to have a bright season if we keep this up!! Great stuff today lads!!
