Another game, and another defeat for Wyke, in this most difficult of seasons, this time coming against Lepton Highlanders. The score finished 4-0 which certainly wasn’t a disaster, and actually considering the difficult circumstances, was a reasonable result.

Wyke started really well, Tai Pedder was playing up front, for the first time in 5 seasons with Wyke, and contributed well to the improving Wyke attack. Scott and Connor were also very lively upfront, but didn’t really create any chances. When Reece came on, he only strengthened the attack, making a couple of good flick-ons, he definitely put in his best performance of the season, however Wyke still didn’t create a chance.

At the other end, Lepton were attacking in force, with some very good attacking players. However, Wyke put up with this threat admirably. Owen, was strong in tackles, and linked up well with centre defence partner Jake Gilderdale, who was carrying a slight injury. Quinn Riley was in goals for the first time since Under 8’s, due to a late injury to Joe Couble before the match. Quinn made a couple of good saves, and was quick off his line, keeping the score at 0-0.

Dom Pickersgill put in a brilliant first half performance, and came to the defence’s aid on quite a few occasions. However after 20 minutes, Lepton broke through a scored. Wyke continued to battle. Wyke had only brought one sub, after losing two players before the match, however they continued to battle, and were unlucky to go 2-0 down just before half time.

The second half started much as the first half had ended, with much of the play in the middle of the pitch, but not many attacking chances. Disaster strook Wyke, when firstly Owen Hanson was taken off injured, then Ashton Towler, leaving only 10 players on the pitch. The Wyke lads battled so hard to stay in the game. Scott Morris, Dom Pickersgill and Nathan Khan were all over the pitch, and all put in a great performance. However Wyke couldn’t hold out against a strong Lepton team, who piled on the pressure against a weakened defence. Lepton scored another two goals, they could have had a couple more, but the Wyke team kept their heads up and didn’t give up on the game, and this was the reason it was only 4-0.

Manager Comments

We lost 4 players to injury today, and this was really hard, we were missing our two goalkeepers, it was always going to be a really hard game, but I thought both our attitude and effort were amazing. Me and Andy are so proud of how we battled today, and came out with a fairly respectable result. Well done boys, if we put in a performance like that against Batley and Battyeford, we might pick up a win!!

Man of the Match

Dom Pickersgill- Dom played with great confidence and belief, and it really showed in his performance today. He had a great first half, and continued his efforts in the second half, coming to the defence’s aid on several occasions.
